Number Skills – Down Syndrome Awareness Month – Day 18.

Counting is tough for AJ. He has his letters and the phonetics down pretty well. He can name numbers, and sign numbers. He gets that they go in order – 1,2,3… but he still hasn’t mastered what they mean.

Number Skills - Down Syndrome Awareness Month,

Most children with Down syndrome struggle with basic number skills. Research indicates that they are typically two years behind their peers. Visual supports and increasedf exposure may aid in teaching number concepts.

We still work on it — asking him to give me two blocks. Or to throw three balls. Any chance we get we try to give him tasks with numbers, in hopes that the light bulb will kick on and he will grasp it. But for now we focus on exposure, and visual aids.

As a side note – this is harder in part because AJ doesn’t eat by mouth. I realized a lot of the tricks we used with Averie involved counting candy or food. AJ isn’t motivated by m&ms like most kids though!
