The night before surgery

In less than 12 hours, Aaron and I will be pacing in the family room here at CHOP. AJ is scheduled to be taken back for anesthesia/surgery starting at 830 AM tomorrow (eastern).

Aaron and I will arrive early at 7 am so we can spend some time with him and hold him before the surgery. There’s no saying how awake/alert he will be, but we were lucky enough to get to spend some pretty decent lengths of time with him today where he was awake and alert.

Tonight I’m spending a couple more hours with him yet, and Aaron will be back over to spend time with him overnight. He’s pretty passed out and sleepy right now.

Lasairiona picked up some adult color books and colored pencils to try to keep us busy and distracted. Help-a-Heart (who had touched base with us when we were at U of I and have been amazingly supportive) are getting us Jimmy Johns delivered for lunch to make sure we eat. Unfortunately the waiting room space is not private at all, so any mental breakdowns we have while sitting around and waiting will be visible to anyone else who happens to be in the room – those of you who know me well probably know how uncomfortable that makes me feel. The nurses will come in and update us periodically, and there is a separate consult room as well.

Aside from that, there’s not much to update on, right now it’s a big scary waiting game. We knew this was what we were coming here for, and we knew it was going to be high risk… But that doesn’t make tomorrow any easier to digest or prepare for. I don’t think anyone can ever be truly well prepared for this…

Please keep AJ in your thoughts and prayers tonight and especially tomorrow morning!
