Genetics and Family Resemblance – Down Syndrome Awareness Month – Day 9.

This is one of the few things I have heard personally. “It’s too bad he won’t look like you and Aaron, but kids with Down syndrome are still really cute.”

Ugh. I cringe just typing that out.

Down syndrome doesn’t impact all of a persons chromosomes, there are 46 (or 47, or 45…) others. Each chromosome carries anywhere from hundreds to thousands of genes. Those genes are what determine a persons genetic traits.

Just like any other child, people with Down syndrome receive their genes from their parents. So the majority of traits like eye color, hair color, dimples, and whether or not a person can roll their tongue are still determined by what is passed down from parents through genetics.

So, on that note – what do you think? Who does AJ look more like?
