Causes of CHDs

Certain genetic conditions increase the risk of having a congenital heart defect. So far Down syndrome and other types of trisomies, Turner syndrome, and 22q11.2 deletion have been linked to an increased risk of having a CHD.

Although some CHDs have been linked to genetic disorders, maternal conditions, and environmental factors, the causes for the majority of CHDs are unknown.
