Averie’s “Crazy Piggies”

Averie’s hair has almost constantly been in the same style for the past couple of months.  She’s been getting a lot of compliments on it – but truth be told – it’s just convenient.  When I put her hair into these pigtails I don’t have to do her hair for 2-3 days — or until next bath time — whichever comes first!

I don’t know how to french braid.  I keep saying I’m going to learn soon — and really, Averie sits perfectly still when it’s time to do her hair, so I’m sure she’d be patient enough to practice on, but this seems to hold even better than a braid does from the few times I’ve had friends do her hair for her…

I pull the very top section of her hair into little piggies first and then start at the bottom and work my way up, pulling each section up to the next.  When I get down to the last section, I pull in the first top piggies as well as the bottom and the new hair.  I usually try to get her to leave the hair twisted into the pigtail into “cat ears” (at least that’s what Averie calls them).  I guess this is somewhat hard to explain in text, but I think most of you are smart enough to understand it!

Averie’s usually pretty receptive to it since she gets to have ‘Crazy Piggies’ with rainbow hair ties…    Anything crazy or rainbow gets her excited!

Looking back at these pictures, I don’t know how I didn’t realize her bangs needed trimmed until the last ones with the pizza and the tree — in those I’d figured it out and pulled her bangs into her pigtails…  they’d fallen out by this photo, but then again – it was day three!  She’s since had her haircut 🙂

On a completely unrelated note — Averie wanted to be a rockstar one day, so we decked her out in all the bright colors and funky jewelry we could find and sent her to daycare/preschool.  She actually managed to come home with almost all of the jewelry.  She only lost the feathery snap bracelet, and she said she gave it to her best friend Emmy.

ETA:  I’ve since stumbled across a site with tons of cute ideas for girls’ hair…  This is pretty close to what I do with Averie’s — except I don’t make the knots and I’ve been using the bigger bright elastics since they’re easier to get out!  I’m going to have to play with Averie’s hair more!!

  1. LOL I do am still drawn to pretty color things there is a pair of tennis shoes I wanted in the window with all the bright pretty colors on the laces! I she has a very good chance of never growing out of this!

    1. I’m not exactly immune to the love of bright colorful things either 🙂 I don’t look good wearing them, but that just means that I have to accessorize with them everywhere else! And it also means that I absolutely have to get Averie lots and lots of pretty colored things!

  2. Her hair is just adorable. My littles have such fine hair that NOTHING stays in at all. I’d love a style that would keep their hair contained for a day or two at a time (my little one HATES having her hair cut. I made them all get bobs this year for my own sanity)

And, did you say a feather snap bracelet? How have we not found/seen one of those?

    1. I had bobs all through my childhood – I had such curly hair that I always looked like a poodle, or a mushroom, depending on the length of my hair. I don’t think Averie’s hair would be quite as crazy as mine, but still 🙂

Sometimes I wish for fine straight hair, but I think the grass is always greener on the other side!!

And yes – feather snap bracelet! It came in a goodie bag that she got at the Playstation with her tickets. I’m kind of in shock that she gave it away – she LOVED it! I’m hoping she doesn’t lose the pink one that she still has. I remember those from when I was a kid… and I remember them being banned from schools because they were unsafe. They must make them different these days!
